Happy Cats took a hiatus from Costco’s Kirkland cat food for a couple of months because of the recall their parent company, Diamond Pet Food, had back in May. The main recall was for their South Carolina plant and our food comes from the Missouri one. When that plant showed up with a salmonella recall, we pulled the food.
We wrote Diamond in August, asking for specific information about the Missouri plant. We received a direct reply in which they provided part of an audit that was conducted at that plant in July by Costco. It showed the average score was better than the year before, resulting in a 95% plus rating that was Excellent.
We realize no food is perfect, but our cats and kittens have done very well on this limited ingredient food, the Adult Maintenance. The food we moved to for the interim was Petsmart’s Authority Sensitive Solutions, which was adequate, but they really seem to thrive on the Kirkland.
If you’d like to know more about how we chose this food, please see our detailed page on what to look for in cat food.
Our Jakob has been eating Kirkland Maintenance Cat for the last six years. Just got a new bag, however, with a noticeably smaller kibble. He used to demolish his dry good with relish — now he just picks at it. Have you noticed a reaction to the smaller kibble in your clan?
Is there any other place to purchase the Kirkland cat food besides Costco? I’m not a member. Thank-you
Hello, We usually have a few extra bags that we can sell. The bags are large, but if you have some freezer space, any excess freezes really well. You can call us at 635-5000 to get more information.
The recall is the least of your issue with this food. I fed my cat this food exclusively. He developed a urethral obstruction. $1,300 later.. Having worked for a few years for a vet when I was in high school, I knew this was a problem with the cheap brands of cat food. Well its a problem with this junk too. If you have a male cat, you don’t want to spend $1,000++ at the vet or have your cat die in pain, stay away from this crap.
Hi Ross, We’re sorry to hear of your very serious issues with your cat. Some of us have been feeding this food for years as well, with no issues, as well as using it for our Happy Cats. But it’s always good to hear a different opinion so pet guardians can make their own choices.
